Located off the coast of Brittany within the Molène archipelago, Quéménès Island is a shining example of energy self-sufficiency and eco-friendly living. Since 2009, a young couple has called this island home, utilizing wind and solar power to meet their energy needs while also hosting guests in eco-conscious accommodations.
This innovative project, initiated by the Conservatoire du Littoral, began when they acquired the island in 2003. Supported by the European ISLA program and various partners, the island has been transformed into a hub for sustainable development, focusing on renewable energy, water treatment, and ecosystem conservation.
The island’s electricity is generated by a combination of a 2.5-kilowatt wind turbine and 70 square meters of photovoltaic solar panels, producing over 6 kW of power. Water heating is accomplished with an additional 2.5 square meters of solar panels. This comprehensive system, which includes battery storage, required a 150,000 Euro investment.
To protect the island’s biodiversity, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are strictly avoided. Sustainability practices include dry toilets and composting. Wastewater is treated through phytoremediation using three specially designed pools, ensuring it does not contaminate natural water sources.
The island features a well that taps into a small, confined aquifer above sea level, supplemented by collected rainwater. A filtration system incorporating paper, charcoal, and UV light makes this water potable.
Despite Quéménès’ modest size of 1.3 km by 400 meters, the couple uses an electric jeep powered by overnight wind energy, having replaced their old tractor, which is reserved for plowing.
