With the arrival of summer come also the annoying, sometimes even dangerous, bites from mosquitoes, sand flies, horseflies and other insects that are rather unpleasant: to avoid their stings we have to offer 3 DIY sprays against mosquitoes that actually work.
The repellent sprays are completely natural, easily made at home. An environmentally friendly alternative to products on the market, often filled with chemicals and perfumes that could irritate the skin.
Essential oils derived from plants are one of the most effective natural elixir to take care of your health and beauty, combined benefits of witch-hazel and shrub with astringent properties you can choose between the essential oil from citronella, clove, rosemary, eucalyptus, mint or lavender. You can buy oil in herbal stores or simply prepare it by yourself using our guide on how to make homemade essential oils at home.
Besides the oil you’ll need:
- Witch-hazel infusion
- Boiled or distilled water
- Vegetable glycerin (optional)
1. DIY sprays against mosquitoes: #1
Preparation: fill a spray bottle of 250 ml halfway up with distilled water. Add the witch-hazel to fill the bottle all the way up, and include 30-50 oil drops you selected. The greater the concentration of oil, the greater the effect of the repellent.
In this case, the effectiveness of the spray repellent will be guaranteed by the properties of dried herbs that combined with the flowers will be very effective to ward off the pesky insects. Among the varieties recommended previously, we suggest the use of at least one plant of the mint family and, optionally, catnip, lavender or lemongrass.
If choose to base your spray on these ingredients you will have to add:
- Distilled water
- Witch-hazel infusion or denatured alcohol

2. Natural spray against mosquitoes: #2
In a cup of boiling water add 3-4 tablespoons of the dried herbs. Mix thoroughly, cover and let it soak for at least 10 minutes. Once it cools down, drain and and add the infused water- denatured alcohol or witch-hazel. Transfer it into a spray bottle and store in a cool, dark and dry place.
3. A repellent spray using vinegar and herbs
To make the repellent extra-strong and effective you should consider using this recipe. The action of dried herbs will be utilized to the fullest with help from the apple vinegar, a powerful tool against insects. The ingredients you’re going to need are:
- 1 liter of apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of dried sage (salvia)
- 1 spray bottle
- 2 tablespoons of rosemary
- a couple tablespoons of lavender
- 2/3 tablespoons of thyme
- 2 tablespoons of mint
And finally let’s see the preparation of this last spray against mosquitoes. Combine the vinegar and all the herbs in a glass container and seal tightly. The herbs will soak for 2 to 3 weeks, shake well at least once a day.
After the process is finished, filter the contents of the bottle and transfer it in a spray container, you might want to dilute it with water by half. In addition to being a very effective insect repellent, this mixture is also a very powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral natural substance. You can take it orally- one tablespoon a day- mixed in with a glass of water.
